Playing White in Commander

White in Commander is the color of rules, structure, and armies. It excels at board wipes, efficient removal, token generation, and taxing opponents who try to go too fast. If you want to control the pace of the game while building an overwhelming board presence, white is where you start.

The classic mono-white strategies include equipment voltron (suit up a single creature and swing for lethal), token swarm (generate an army and anthem it), and stax (slow everyone else down with taxing effects like Thalia and Blind Obedience). White also has the deepest pool of board wipes in the format, from Wrath of God to Farewell, giving you reset buttons when things go sideways.

White's historical weakness in Commander has been card draw, though recent sets have added catch-up draw and impulse effects that help close the gap. Cards like Esper Sentinel, Welcoming Vampire, and Smuggler's Share give mono-white decks the fuel they used to lack. Mono-white is no longer the underdog it once was — it's a legitimate choice for players who like clean answers and going wide.
