Playing Orzhov in Commander

Orzhov is the color pair of attrition, taxation, and incremental advantage. White provides rules and structure; black provides the willingness to break them for profit. Together they build decks that slowly drain opponents' resources — life, creatures, cards — while accumulating small advantages that compound into victory.

Orzhov archetypes include aristocrats (the definitive home for sacrifice-based strategies), lifegain/drain (extort and similar effects that scale in multiplayer), token generation with sacrifice payoffs, stax (taxing effects from both colors), and reanimator with white's recursion support. Commanders in Orzhov frequently reward you for creatures dying, life being gained or lost, or opponents being forced to pay extra for their spells.

The strength of Orzhov is removal — you have the best creature removal in the format from both colors, plus white's enchantment answers and black's edict effects. You also have strong recursion, letting you grind out longer games. The weakness is that Orzhov can be slow to close. Draining someone from 40 to 0 takes time, and without blue's counterspells or green's ramp, you sometimes struggle to keep up with faster combo or ramp strategies. But Orzhov rewards patience, and the player who grinds longest usually wins.
