Playing Mardu in Commander
Mardu is the color trio of aggressive disruption. Red provides speed and damage; white provides removal and anthems; black provides tutors, sacrifice, and recursion. Mardu decks hit hard and fast while tearing apart opponents' boards — the most aggressively interactive color combination in Commander.
Mardu archetypes include aristocrats (the three-color version with red's treasure and impulse draw added), vampire tribal, equipment/warrior strategies, token swarm with sacrifice payoffs, and stax/hatebear strategies that slow the game to a crawl while your aggressive creatures chip away. Mardu commanders like Edgar Markov generate tokens on every cast, Queen Marchesa provides card advantage through the monarch, and Isshin doubles attack triggers.
Mardu's strength is removal density. Between white's exiles, black's destroys, and red's damage, there is no permanent type you can't handle. You also have excellent aggression — haste, extra combats, and go-wide tokens backed by anthems. The weakness is card draw and ramp. Without green or blue, you rely on impulse draw, treasure, and one-shot card advantage effects. Mardu needs to be efficient with its resources because refilling your hand is harder than in blue or green decks. Build lean and stay aggressive.
