Playing Izzet in Commander

Izzet is the color pair of instants, sorceries, and doing degenerate things with them. Blue provides card draw and counterspells; red provides direct damage, impulse draw, and haste. Together they form the premier spellslinger identity — decks that want to cast as many noncreature spells as possible and get rewarded for each one.

Izzet archetypes include spellslinger (commanders that trigger on instant/sorcery casts), storm (chain cheap spells into a lethal finisher), artifacts (Izzet has excellent artifact synergies), extra turns, and copy/clone strategies that duplicate your best spells. Commanders like Niv-Mizzet turn your card draw into damage, while others like Mizzix reduce spell costs to enable explosive combo turns.

The strength of Izzet is velocity — you draw more cards and cast more spells per turn than almost any other color pair. The weakness is board presence. Izzet decks tend to have few creatures and rely on their commander or a combo finish to win. If your commander gets removed repeatedly and your combo pieces are exiled, you can struggle to close the game. Izzet also has trouble with resolved enchantments — Cyclonic Rift is your best friend here, but it's one card in 99.
