Playing Gruul in Commander

Gruul is the color pair of raw power and directness. Green ramps, red provides haste, and together they put enormous threats on the battlefield faster than anyone else. If your game plan is "make big creature, turn it sideways, repeat," Gruul is the identity that does this best.

Gruul archetypes include stompy (ramp into huge threats and attack), lands-matter (leverage landfall and land-doubling effects), power-matters (cards that care about creature power for draw and removal), dragon tribal, and combo strategies built around infinite combat steps or mana. The color pair also has excellent permanent removal — Beast Within, Chaos Warp, and their variants handle almost anything.

The strength of Gruul is its speed and resilience. You're deploying threats before control decks can set up, and green's recursion means individual removal spells don't slow you down much. The weakness is card draw — while both colors have gotten better at this recently (impulse draw in red, creature-based draw in green), Gruul can still run out of gas in grindy games. The best Gruul decks build in enough draw to keep the pressure going through turns seven and eight, not just the explosive opener.
