Playing Golgari in Commander

Golgari is the color pair of the graveyard, the cycle of life and death, and extracting value from things dying. Black sacrifices; green recurs. Black kills creatures; green grows new ones. Together they build the most resilient decks in Commander — strategies that actively benefit from being disrupted because everything comes back.

Golgari archetypes include graveyard value (fill the yard, then reanimate or recur the best pieces), aristocrats (sacrifice for profit with green and black payoffs), self-mill combo, -1/-1 counters, deathtouch tribal, and lands-from-graveyard strategies. Golgari commanders often interact with the graveyard directly — Meren accumulates experience counters to reanimate bigger threats each turn, Gitrog draws cards off land sacrifice, and Izoni creates tokens from your graveyard.

The strength of Golgari is resilience and removal. You have the best creature removal (black), the best permanent removal (green), and the best recursion (both). A Golgari deck that's been board-wiped three times is often in a better position than it started. The weakness is card draw velocity — while both colors draw cards, neither matches blue's raw throughput. Golgari wins the long game by attrition rather than speed, which means fast combo decks can sometimes race you.
