Playing Colorless in Commander

Colorless commanders operate outside the five-color system entirely. They can't run any colored spells, which sounds like a crippling restriction — and in some ways it is. But it also means every land in the deck produces mana you can actually use, and colorless has access to some of the most powerful artifacts and Eldrazi in the game.

The archetype splits roughly into two camps: Eldrazi decks that want to ramp into enormous creatures as fast as possible, and artifact-combo decks that assemble engine pieces without needing colored mana. Commanders like Kozilek and Ulamog provide card advantage stapled to game-ending threats, while artifact-focused options like Traxos or Karn let you build around synergy rather than raw power.

The biggest challenge is interaction. Without access to counterspells, targeted removal, or board wipes in the traditional sense, colorless decks lean on artifacts like Spine of Ish Sah, All Is Dust, and Nevinyrral's Disk. Card draw is similarly artifact-dependent. The payoff is a deck that feels genuinely different from anything else at the table — and opponents often underestimate what colorless can do until it's too late.
