Playing Boros in Commander

Boros is the color pair of combat and equipment. Red brings haste and extra combat steps; white brings anthems, equipment synergies, and the best cheap creatures. Together they build the most aggressive two-color decks in Commander — decks that want to attack early, attack often, and end games through combat damage.

Boros archetypes include equipment voltron (suit up a commander and swing for lethal commander damage), go-wide aggro (tokens plus anthems plus extra combats), soldiers/knights tribal, and artifact-based strategies that leverage both colors' affinity for equipment and vehicles. Recent Boros commanders have also enabled spellslinger and combo strategies that move beyond pure aggro.

Boros has improved dramatically in recent years. Cards like Esper Sentinel, Wheel of Misfortune, and treasure generators have solved the historic card-draw problem. The color pair now has legitimate staying power through turns eight and nine, which used to be unthinkable. The weakness is still interaction with the stack — no counterspells means combo decks can ignore your board and win without you being able to stop them. But for players who want to turn creatures sideways and make combat math exciting, Boros is the most rewarding color pair in Commander.
