Playing Blue in Commander

Blue is the color of answers. Counterspells, card draw, bounce effects, clones, and theft — blue controls the game by having more options than everyone else at the table. In Commander, where the multiplayer dynamic makes raw card advantage even more powerful, blue is arguably the strongest single color.

Mono-blue strategies range from hard control (counter everything important, win with a single threat) to tempo (cheap creatures backed by interaction) to combo (assemble infinite loops using blue's deep card selection). Commanders like Urza and Talrand turn your interaction spells into win conditions. Blue also has the best access to extra turns, which can close games out of nowhere.

The trade-off is that blue struggles to deal with permanents that resolve. It can counter anything on the stack, but once something hits the battlefield, blue's answers are mostly bounce effects — temporary solutions. This means mono-blue pilots need to be disciplined about when to spend their counterspells and when to hold them. Get that balance right and you'll be the player everyone watches nervously when they cast a spell.
