Playing Black in Commander

Black is the color that pays any price to win. Life is a resource, creatures are expendable, and the graveyard is just a second hand. In Commander, black's willingness to sacrifice everything — including its own board — translates into some of the most powerful and resilient strategies in the format.

Mono-black archetypes include aristocrats (sacrifice creatures for value), reanimator (cheat massive threats out of the graveyard), voltron with evasive commanders, and big-mana strategies powered by Cabal Coffers and similar effects. Black has the best single-target removal in the format, the most efficient tutors, and recursive threats that keep coming back no matter how many times they're answered.

Black's weakness is its inability to deal with artifacts and enchantments directly. Cards like Feed the Swarm have started to patch this gap, but mono-black still relies heavily on making opponents sacrifice or discard rather than directly destroying non-creature permanents. The color makes up for it with raw power — Mono-black can generate absurd amounts of mana, draw cards at will, and reanimate creatures that other colors can only dream of casting fairly.
